Context

The Ebro Group, a global leader in the rice sector with a significant international presence in the premium dry pasta and fresh pasta businesses, aimed to measure its carbon footprint as a basis for defining a decarbonization plan aligned with the environmental commitments made in its sustainability strategy.

Considering that land-use intensive sectors account for more than 20% of global emissions, the company sought to address increasing regulatory pressure and customer demands.

The challenge

With a complex international value chain, measuring Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions for Ebro Group posed a challenge in terms of involving stakeholders (including more than 30 companies within the group and their suppliers) and in terms of information availability.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES :

  1. Define a model that would allow the Ebro Group to measure its carbon footprint autonomously.
  2. Evaluate the implications of setting Group-level short-term decarbonization targets in line with SBTi sector-specific requirements.
  3. Define a decarbonization plan for the Group's main European company.
  4. Assess the environmental and financial implications of the objectives to be defined.

Plan of action

To address the challenges associated with measuring the Ebro Group's carbon footprint and defining decarbonization objectives, we follow this approach:

  1. Understanding Ebro Group's international operations and evaluating Scope 3 categories.
  2. Engaging the most relevant companies within the Group and analyzing the availability of key information needed for carbon footprint measurement.
  3. Defining the calculation method for each applicable Scope 3 category, ensuring alignment with the GHG Protocol and the sector-specific FLAG standard.
  4. Identifying areas for improvement in Scope 1 and 2 measurements.
  5. Developing the carbon footprint measurement and assessment tool for 2023.
  6. Assessing the implications of defining short-term decarbonization targets in line with SBTi standards (including the FLAG sector-specific standard).
  7. Proposing short-term decarbonization targets for Ebro Group (2030).
  8. Defining Herba Ricemills' short-term decarbonization plan, evaluating its impact in terms of financial and footprint reduction.
