The latest report from companies to achieve SDG 2: Zero Hunger
This third edition of Access to Seeds Index o Seed Access Index, evaluates 67 companies for their efforts to make their products available to small farmers in three regions: South and Southeast Asia, East and Southern Africa, and West and Central Africa.
La World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) has published the results of this year's Access to Seeds Index. This index evaluates the contribution of agricultural producers in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. The index shows the results of 32 large companies present in West and Central Africa and 32 other companies in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Since small farmers are the main producers of food in countries with lower incomes, their access to good quality seeds of improved varieties is an essential element in ensuring that the population of these regions has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. Seed companies play a key role in ensuring this access.
The 2021 Access to Seeds Index shows that, as a whole, companies are offering diversified crop portfolios with more resilient crops to support small farmers facing climate change. Compared to 2019, more companies have been identified that are investing in good agronomic practices so that small farmers increase their crop yields.
Improved management has also been identified due to the use of new technologies to communicate with small farmers in remote areas, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a lack of training programs aimed at the new generation of farmers, especially women.
